India beats Sri Lanka to become World Cup 2011 Winner Scorecard

Mumbai, India (BSNS) 2nd April, 2011 - The 2011 Cricket World Cup Final took place between India and Sri Lanka cricket team at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 2 April 2011 in front of 33, 000 spectators. India won the match by six wickets. Both teams were looking for their second World Cup; Sri Lanka had last won the trophy in 1996, while India last won in 1983.

Yuvraj Singh was awarded Player of the Series and Mahendra Singh Dhoni was selected man of the Match.

Winning the Toss sri Lanka elected to bat and were 274 for 6. Mahela Jayawardene 103* (88) bated through the end to help Sri Lanka score a good total.

India started slowly, with Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar both dismissed early, leaving the hosts 31 for two. Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir started the recovery with some fluent stroke play and took India to 114 before Kohli was caught-and-bowled by Tillakaratne Dilshan 35. However captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni continued the good work along with Gambhir, scoring 91 in 79 deliveries, and adding 109 for the fourth wicket with Gambhir, who scored 97. Following Gambhir's dismissal, Yuvraj Singh came to the crease, and with his support, Dhoni took India to victory and sealed the match hitting a six off Nuwan Kulasekara.

There was an upset when Sri Lanka's off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan failed to take a wicket in his last international match.
