Efficient India complete 100th Test win

India 642 (Gambhir 167, Dravid 144, Sehwag 131, Herath 5-121) beat Sri Lanka 229 (Sreesanth 5-75) and 269 (Samaraweera 78*) by an innings and 144 runs

India achieved their biggest victory against Sri Lanka and in the process clinched their 100th Test win on the fourth day of the second Test in Kanpur. India's previous best against their neighbors was a victory by an innings and 119 runs in 1994 and they bettered that with ease today. Thilan Samaraweera resisted the inevitable with an assured fifty but it was always just a matter of time before India wrapped up the game.

The only question at the start of the day was how long Sri Lanka would delay defeat. They batted positively, adding 149 runs in the first session, but India kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Samaraweera was involved in two fighting partnerships with Prasanna Jayawardene and Ajantha Mendis, which not only proved that the pitch wasn't bad for batting but also showed the top order in poor light.

India's only concern was Zaheer Khan's no-ball problems (12 in this game and 21 in the series) but he started the day by dismissing Angelo Mathews in his first over. Mathews had hit three consecutive fours, which included a pull, and Zaheer placed a man at deep square-leg and tested Mathews with more bouncers. The first was fended off in an ungainly manner and the next was top-edged to backward point where Rahul Dravid took a lunging catch.

Samaraweera proceeded to stitch together a 61-run partnership with Prasanna who, much like in the first innings, flattered to deceive. He was looking good with his cuts and sweeps but was cleaned up by an off break from round the stumps from Harbhajan Singh. It drifted away and broke back in but Prasanna left a big bat-pad gap and was bowled. Muttiah Muralitharan indulged himself with a typical hit-and-giggle knock filled with slog sweeps but fell, going for yet another big hit.

Samaraweera, who then added 73 runs with a determined Ajantha Mendis to frustrate India, was rarely troubled during his stay, the highlight of which was a whippy on-drive to a delivery on off and middle stump from Sreesanth. He rarely looked hurried, tackled the spinners and seamers and unfurled several pleasing on drives. The series now moves to Mumbai for the third Test that starts on December 2.

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

A thumping victory for the hosts, their 100th in Tests; they played their first in 1932-33 and won their first game in 1952 against England. The pair of Mendis and Samaraweera kept India frustrated for well over an hour but the introduction of Yuvraj Singh into the attack broke the stand. It's also their third-biggest victory (in terms of runs) in Tests. India struck an early blow this morning, getting rid of Mathews, who failed to spot a slower one. Prasanna and Samaraweera then added a half-century stand before the former fell to a beauty by Harbhajan. Herath didn't last too long, Murali entertained and left before Mendis dug in. Yuvraj, though, eventually struck, followed by Ojha, to leave Samaraweera stranded.

We'll get you the presentation details in just a bit.

Sangakkara: "It was a very good wicket. A bit in it for a few overs. It got slower and slower and made it a bit difficult to bat on. Exceptional performance by Sreesanth, great first innings by India and a poor one from us. that decided the match. We needed good partnerships; lose shots here and there, and that cost us. If the batsmen apply themselves and and occupy the crease, the the pitch is a good one to bat on. We have to be mentally strong to come back in Mumbai. We need to create chances early and take them."

Dhoni: "The wicket was quite good. Nothing even close to what we played on in Ahmedabad. The grass was kept on the track throughout. It started to turn a bit on the first day and kept a little low. It was important that we got that many runs on the first day. The changes in side brought in some fresh legs, Sreesanth is one of the best reverse swing bowlers in India. Ojha had a very good debut. It was important to win this big and gain the momentum; there will be something for the fast bowlers as well as spinners in Mumbai. It's a moment of pride for me, this 100th win, and I am honoured to be part of this side."

Sreesanth is the Man of the Match for his six-wicket match haul.

Sreesanth: "God's been kind. I have lots of people to thank. Yet to read all those messages. I'm working on my pace, am trying to get it to the 145 kmph mark, I'm feeling good. I want to thank Warwickshire and the Indian board for letting me play there, I played quite a bit of domestic cricket too and learnt a lot. There is room for improvement and I want to keep on learning. "

That's all we have from here, folks. Thanks for tuning in and sending us your feedback. Join us again for the next game on December 2, being played in Mumbai. Until then, on behalf of George Binoy and Siddarth Ravindran, this is Sid Talya signing off. Be well!

Indian cricket team observes a minute silence on the first anniversary of the Mumbai attacks

Indian cricket team observes a minute's silence on the first anniversary of the Mumbai attacks before the start of play against Sri Lanka on the third day of the second Test in Kanpur.

Yuvraj Singh hit half centuries India 639/7 Tea report

Kanpur, Nov 25 (IANS) Sri Lankan left arm spinner Rangana Herath took three wickets in the second session as India reached 639 for seven at tea on the second day of the second cricket Test at Green Park here Wednesday.

V.V.S Laxman (63) and Yuvraj Singh (66 batting) added 102 runs for the fifth wicket before the former got out trying to accelerate the scoring. India added 104 runs in the session.
Laxman, whose 121-ball knock included five fours, was dismissed as he came down the track to clear mid-off, but mistimed and holed out to Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Three overs later, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was bowled through the gates when he missed the line of a Herath (3-118) delivery.

Harbhajan Singh was out to a similar ball from Herath which turned and hit the timber.
Yuvraj played his customary shots after the lunch break, hitting four boundaries and two sixes in his 98-ball knock.

Yuvraj came to the crease just before lunch after Rahul Dravid compiled his 28th century and became Test cricket’s fourth highest scorer, surpassing former Australian captain Allan Border.
Dravid’s innings was cut short at 144 runs after he had added 59 runs to his overnight score. He was run out after backing up a bit too far as left arm spinner Herath, while attempting to stop a Laxman shot off his own bowling , palmed the ball back to the stumps.

But by then Dravid had made sure that India reached a position of strength and cashed in on the advantage of the big first day total of 417 for two that included explosive centuries from Virender Sehwag (131) and Gautam Gambhir (167).

Dravid, who pulled India out of trouble with a counter-attacking 177 in the drawn Ahmedabad Test, reached his second consecutive ton when he straight drove left arm pacer Chanaka Welegedara for a four. He played 172 balls for his 28th century and hit 10 fours.

He crossed a milestone when he took a single off Herath, surpassing Border’s aggregate of 11,174 runs to become Test cricket’s fourth highest scorer after Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting.

Dravid now has 11,182 runs in 136 Tests at an average of 53.50.
India scored at a brisk pace and added 118 runs in 20 overs in the session. Dravid was the dominant partner in the 94-run stand with Tendulkar (40).
Dravid’s 226-ball effort had 15 fours and one six.

Sachin's debut match was against Pakistan in a test match on 1989. His one-day international (ODI) debut was on December 18 against Pakistan. His maiden ODI century came on September 9, 1994 against Australia in Sri Lanka at Colombo, just six years after his debut.

On December 11, 1988, aged just 15 years and 232 days, Tendulkar scored 100 not out in his debut first-class match for Bombay against Gujarat, making him the youngest Indian to score a century on first-class debut.

Family: Father - Ramesh Tendulkar, Mother - , Wife - Anjali Mehta, Daughter - Sarah, Son - Arjun, Brothers - Nitin & Ajit Tendulkar, Sister - Savita.

In 1995, Sachin Tendulkar married Anjali (born November 10, 1967), a paediatrician and daughter of Gujarati industrialist Anand Mehta. They have two children, Sara (born October 12, 1997), and Arjun (born September 24, 1999).

Captaincy goes, but Tendulkar the run-machine is at its best in 1998. Two of his favourites - opponents Australia and venue Chennai - come together, and the bowlers pale into insignificance as his second-innings 155 turns a deficit into a match-winning total. Later, a certain Mr. Shane Warne suffers from nightmares

At the same ground in 1999, the first sign his body is suffering. In spite of a back injury, Tendulkar scores a masterful 136. India, though, fall short by 16 runs against Pakistan, and a poor fourth-innings record remains a blot in Tendulkar's CV

Even the Don takes note of Tendulkar's batting, and says the Indian batsman's style resembles him the most among those from the modern era. Tendulkar's tour of Australia in 1999-2000 - he's captain as well - is not in keeping with high expectations, with a few rough decisions coming his way

He yet tops the batting charts for India. India's hopes fade whenever he departs, and the captain cuts a lone figure as his team loses all three Tests. He steps down from captaincy during South Africa's visit in 2000

Tendulkar makes 10 in both innings, but he picks up three wickets in the Australia's second innings as India win the epic Test at Eden Gardens in 2001 to level the series

India and Tendulkar have an unsuccessful tour of New Zealand in 2002-03. The team begins the 2003 World Cup in South Africa under pressure; however, they make it to the final with Tendulkar the Player of the Tournament

A workmanlike innings in Sydney during the 2003-04 Australia tour helps Tendulkar to his first double-century overseas. His unbeaten scores of 241 and 60 - in Steve Waugh's farewell Test - almost results in a series win

Another 10,000: During his 52 against Pakistan in the Kolkata Test in 2005, Tendulkar becomes the first to score 10,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs
At home in Australia: The crowds are entertained as Tendulkar makes two hundreds in the four-Test series in 2007-08. India lose 2-1, but Tendulkar goes home a happy man, scoring 117 not out and 91 as India beat Australia in the finals to clinch the tri-nation one-day tournament

Playing a Test in Pakistan after nearly 15 years, Tendulkar scores an unbeaten 194 - a declaration denies him the double. However, it's Virender Sehwag - who developed with Tendulkar as a role model - who steals the show in Multan, becoming the first Indian triple-centurion

Captaincy comes calling, and Tendulkar leads India to a win in the one-off home Test against Australia to bag the newly instituted Border-Gavaskar Trophy, named after two players he would eventually join in the 10,000-run club

A special win: Tendulkar holds the trophy after India beat England 1-0 during their 2007 tour, his first series victory outside the subcontinent

Come Chennai and he's back to his best. Makes a hundred in the first innings as India win a memorable series 2-1

He's out stumped for the only time in his career, in Bangalore, but Tendulkar is still the best batsman on show and the Player of the Series as India win 1-0

As captain on the 1999-2000 tour of Australia, Sachin Tendulkar practises his bowling - but he struggles as a leader

Sachin now holds the record for having taken most one-day runs (17000+) and centuries (45).
Highest Score - 186*. He belongs to the group of rare sportsmen and his records might never be broken. Sachin Tendulkar has also captained India for few years.
